What Should I Do if the Camera Inspection Reveals Damage or a Blockage in My Sewer Line?

Camera inspections are an excellent tool for diagnosing plumbing problems with as little disruption as possible. If your inspection uncovers underlying damage, a trusted plumbing specialist will discuss your best options with you, which will be based on your unique situation. One of the most important first steps in the face of any plumbing problem is consulting with an experienced Pennsylvania plumbing pro at American Sewer Specialist.

Your Sewer Problem

Your next steps after a camera inspection of your sewer line will depend on the specific kind of trouble identified.

Damage Caused by Tree Roots

When your sewer lines were laid, tree roots were very likely not a concern. With the passage of time, however, strong tree roots can develop, and they can lead to serious plumbing problems. Tree roots are powerful and seek water wherever they can find it, which makes sewer lines prime targets. In the process, they can crush, offset, or clog a pipe and cause a lot of plumbing woes as a result.

Sometimes, the answer is cleaning out the pipes with a high-powered auger, which may need to be scheduled on a regular basis to prevent the problem from recurring. In other instances, however, older pipes, such as those made of clay or cast iron, may need to be replaced with newer PVC lines that are less prone to root intrusion.

Offset Pipes

If the camera inspection identifies two sections of pipes that no longer line up correctly, you have an offset issue. This can be the result of any of the following:

The larger the offset, the more likely it is that this area of your sewer line will need significant repairs.

Low Area or Belly

If your sewer lines have a low point, which is usually called a belly or sag, it can collect debris that can cause plumbing problems. Sometimes, sags are minor concerns that simply fill with standing water. The more sloped the sag, however, the greater the chance that this area of your system will need direct repair.

Grease Build Up

It’s not uncommon to get grease buildup in modern plumbing lines, and when this sticky substance is not regularly cleared out, it can interfere with the flow of waste. Jet cleaning can make quick work of greasy buildup, and if the problem includes tree roots, augering could take care of both issues.

Cracks

If your sewer line develops cracks along the bottom, it can translate to a serious plumbing problem. Trenchless pipe lining may resolve the issue without serious digging.
